Solvay peracetic acid products have been established as an extremely effective biofilm remover, this is mainly due to its existence as an equilibrium mixture of peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, acetic acid and water. The hydrogen peroxide present reacts with the polysaccharide layer of the biofilm causing it to disrupt at which point the peracetic acid will destroy the micro-organisms present. This effect in removing biofilm has been exploited widely in the paper industry, where Solvay peracetic acid products are used and have registrations as a slimicide in some countries.
